Face Everything And Rise! or forget everything and run? / fear is the mind killer….
if we give it Our Power
Are we starting a new role? Are we beginning a new relationship? Are we relocating? Are we not sure what may come next? Are we about to experience something new or participate within something not partaken, previously?
Are we______? Fill in the blank. The facade of healthy or unhealthy fears can wreak havoc with us....
if we allow it.
2005, was the year. An independent musician with over 200 live performances under his belt, had yet another show approaching. And yet again, another bad case of the jitters. Outwardly, he was receiving rave reviews from critics, fans and musicians alike. Inwardly, the fear carried over into his performances, making him very uncomfortable on-stage. Despite his outward success, he just was not having fun.
He often pondered why he got so uptight, every time he had a forthcoming performance. “I ought to have this, by now,” resonated between his ears.
Off nights were spent frequenting venues and networking with other musicians. On this particular night, he was visiting an old, “been in business forever” Blues establishment. During the second break, he approached a player and made his acquaintance. After chatting about the sounds and the groove for a bit, he felt safe and comfortable with the Energy from the six-stringer.
Feeling at ease of not being judged, the fellow musician made a choice. Without hesitation, the performer risked vulnerability and put it out there.
“Brother, I have played over 200 shows at this point and I still get nervous, every time. It is dimming my light.” The Wise Blues player genuinely grinned, answering with a voice of understanding, his face lit with expressions of empathy and humanity. “Boy, the night you don’t get nervous, is the night you are really going to screw up.” They shared a laugh together.

Paying it Forward: At military memorial services, taps are generally played on a trumpet or bugle. Recently, at a graveside service, honoring a WWII Veteran, no bugler was available. A lady who plays the French Horn was available. And the family hired her.
Previous to that day, she had never played taps on her horn in public. I was informed of these facts as she arrived, only a few minutes before the family was to start arriving. She was shaky.
The Humble man shared some Soul Wisdom, which resonates and reminds us, after all these years….
Understanding her plight, quick action was needed. I pulled her aside and shared the Blues Player’s Soul Wisdom with her, followed by some encouragement; “You’ve Got This”, I assured her. “I Believe in You!” She looked up, kind of dumbfounded, but at the same time, relieved.
Her husband overheard the mini-motivational speech and called me over. “Thank you for that.” He whispered. “You’re welcome” I replied, “But I can only take credit for what was graciously shared by a Catalyst and Guide, in 2005.”
When it was time to perform, she absolutely nailed it!
Turned it around; Shifted To Change! Congratulations!
Healthy fears develop into unhealthy fears when the mind creates a reaction, rather than a Response. Mistake are made when we run from fear, instead of Strutting With fear.
Reprogramming tools: Acceptance and Self-Acceptance. If we feel nervous, it’s because we are supposed to feel nervous. So, what you are feeling, independent musician, new hire, whomever…. are positive healthy and normal emotions.
We are Uniquely Talented, Gifted, Miraculously Bestowed and Powerful Human Beings. We would not have been brought to these moments, if we did have in our possession the qualifications and tools to succeed.
Flip The Script:
We take the nervous energy and turn it into Positive Energy. Let Your Light Shine!
Does the musician still get nervous, eighteen years later and 800 shows later? You bet he does. And he smiles, applying what he learned. And he nails it, every time.
Turned it around; Shifted To Change! Congratulations!”
